Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport based on the fundamentals of leveraging technique to overcome brute strength.  The roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be traced back to the Gracie family, who were responsible for its technical development and worldwide popularity.

The Gracie patriarchs, Carlos and Helio, are widely credited for enhancing “traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu” as taught to them by Mitsuyo Maeda, a renowned master from Kodokan Judo.  The Gracie family took the teachings of Mitsuyo Maeda and transformed it into a self-defense system in which a smaller, weaker person can subdue a larger, stronger opponent by implementing the rules of physics and integrating tactical strategy. One such strategy is taking the opponent to the ground, where potential striking and force generation is greatly reduced.

Over several decades, the Gracie family proved the effectiveness of their system in real life applications including no holds barred contests, mixed martial arts competitions (such as the UFC: Ultimate Fighting Championships) as well as street combat.

Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known as a battle-tested self defense system and also one of the fastest growing sports in the world.  BJJ is considered a “soft” martial art which incorporates grappling, chokes, joint locks, and escapes.  BJJ teaches its practitioner to use the mind over muscles.  The objective of BJJ is not to hurt the opponent, but rather to control and submit a potential attacker. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts to be found – as used in the military, the ring, and countless environments where self preservation is critical.
