A while ago, I mentioned that I’d really seen an improvement in my running speed since I’d started coming to Ice Chamber. Last weekend, I did a race in London — 10 laps (about 4 miles) around Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal plays. I won, for the women anyway. Here’s a picture of me getting a trophy from two members of the Arsenal women’s team, Emma Byrne and Ellen White. Thanks for helping me boost my speed!

Steven and Maya, It was a privilege to be able to come there and learn from true professionals. The teaching talent that both of you have, to get across the ideas and techniques that are involved in the athleticism of the kettlebell, is truly remarkable. You guys should very proud of what you have to offer people, as well as your accomplishments.

Ice Chamber makes working out actually fun and something that I look forward to, not something that I have to do and dread. I’m constantly looking forward to the next workout and always know I’m going to break a good sweat!

Although I was a national judo champion in Brazil with plenty of physical training experience, I decided train with Steve at the Ice Chamber to keep me in top shape for combat sports. The unconventional training style and intensity of the Ice Chamber is simply the best. Their strength and conditioning program helped me win a Bronze medal at my very first Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu competition; which happened to be the world renowned Pan-American Championships!

My job is to critically appraise and interpret scientific data and to teach others to do the same. When I got serious about fitness, I got serious about finding examples of best practices. My search brought me to a course at the Ice Chamber where I found gifted trainers conveying sophisticated concepts about physiology and biomechanics along with a real sense of joy in how amazing the body is, along with a community of vibrant athletes of all ages and skill levels. I can’t get enough. Now one of my personal goals it to make an annual pilgrimage to the Ice Chamber to soak in the energy, see what’s new in group training, and take home a small reserve of the excellence that folks in the Berkeley area have at their doorstep year round.

Steven & Maya, Thank you for an exceptional kettlebell experience. You are both outstanding instructors and combine excellent technique ques and progressions to enable us to be more efficient in increasing both our strength and cardio capacity. This will be invaluable in helping me to instruct clients more effectively without the risk of injury. Your facility and testimonials are most impressive, but what I appreciated most was more valuable instruction and less drill sergeant ego.

On the platform Maya has demonstrated excellent technique, showed courage, endurance, patience, and unwavering will to win, inherent only in a great champion. I note that few people in my years of coaching practice have studied with such care, diligence, perseverance and hard work. Her mental clarity, responsiveness, ability to sacrifice, high professionalism, and love for our sport convince me that the Maya Garcia, undoubtedly, will take a leading place among those who are engaged in Kettlebell Sport.

Ice Chamber is a fantastic facility that has so much to offer on every level. As a member of the U.S. Ski Team, I have specific requirements for my off-snow training and Ice Chamber fulfills all of my needs. I can always count on the Ice Chamber for its motivating and inspiring training environment. I always look forward to my training there. Thanks so much to the whole Ice Chamber community for continually taking me to another level!

My experience at the Ice Chamber has been transformative. I was not a big gym-workout guy before, but after coming to the Ice Chamber for a few months, I am hooked. Other workouts pale in comparison and lack the combination of full body strength training, intense cardio workout, personalized instruction, and inspirational classmates (all in one hour!). Every time I come away amazed by what I am able to accomplish physically and mentally.

I’ve been doing Judo for the past 19 years and only just recently began supplementing my training with strength and conditioning programs at Ice Chamber…. in hopes of taking my Judo to the next level; hopefully to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.Coming so close in 2008 as an Olympic Alternate has only fueled my drive to make the team that much more. Training at Ice Chamber has allowed me to challenge myself physically in the gym where I then utilize my new found strength positively on the mat. And with the support I’ve already been given and continue to receive by the Ice Chamber family, I hope to continue to progress and accomplish my goals.

Right after making the national team we did physical testing to see where we were athletically. I did the best in the core and explosiveness tests, which were exactly what Steven and I had been working on in our training sessions at the Ice Chamber. What attracted me initially to the Ice Chamber were the facilities and equipment that I could not find elsewhere in the Bay Area. But what I’ve found is most remarkable about the Ice Chamber is its positive energy that starts with the staff and is obvious in every member and training session.

I knew, as I left my first session with Jess over a year ago (shaking, sweating and feeling like the luckiest person alive), that the Ice Chamber was the place for me. The right place for me, Olympic caliber athletes, strong young athletes, public safety officers, Kettlebell champions, pregnant moms, high school kids in training….the right place for anyone who is motivated to discover their own potential, celebrate their own gifts and work tremendously hard to achieve their own goals. I turned 60 last week, more fit than I was at 40, looking forward to new challenges, having a great deal of fun, and competing in my first Kettlebell competition!! I celebrate Steven, Maya, Jess and staff for creating such an amazing, supportive, professional, focused, intelligent, inclusive program—and now there’s room for more!
Steven and Maya are two of the best coaches we have in our organization, and are now appointed Master Coaches with World Kettlebell Club. Their technical understanding and attention to detail are high level. The results they have gotten with their students are nothing short of astounding. Bringing several CMS within 1 years time is something no other group has done to date, so I highly recommend anyone learn the fine art of Kettlebell Lifting through them.

The Ice Chamber for me is the missing link. I am a studio potter. My work in clay demands movement and strength; from wedging and throwing 8+ pounds of clay to leaning into a kiln and stacking heavy kiln shelves. I am only 5’3″. When I first got started in ceramics my mentor not only showed me around the clay studio, she also took me to the gym and said “you are going to need to be strong”. I also run, telemark ski, climb, bike, swim and do yoga. Did I mention two kids? That doesn’t leave a lot of time for the gym, especially the typical two hour gym experience where you move from one piece of equipment to the next in order to achieve a full body work out. That’s where the Ice Chamber comes in. Workouts at the IC are always efficient, complete, challenging, sweaty and fun! I was pretty fit when I started coming to the IC a year and a half ago, I thought adding the IC would be a good way to maintain my fitness. What I didn’t know then is how much more the experience would be. I am continually challenged, asked more of, motivated and entertained by the staff and other people at the Ice Chamber. Another unexpected benefit of the IC are the friends I have made, not something I can say about my past gym experiences. I keep getting stronger and the IC brings balance to my life.

The Ice Chamber has re-energized my workout. Prior to working out with Steve, exercise had become a boring routine. Steve and I focus on core strengthening and job specific workouts. Each workout is time efficient, and both mentally and physically challenging. Within a short time I have already begun to get stronger, leaner and more defined. The intense training I receive with Steve will assist me as a firefighter, not only in my endurance and explosive strength, but in saving lives of others and perhaps my own life.

The Ice Chamber is my happy place. I am always truly excited to get there and find out what the top notch training crew has come up with on any given day… Having retired from the sport of gymnastics more years ago than I’d like to admit, the IC has allowed me to see, and to be pleasantly surprised by, what my body is still capable of doing. The workouts are designed to push you as hard as you want to go, without being discouraging to the “newbies” (new bootcampers). I could go on, but 10 a.m. Core Class is calling, and I’m off to my Happy Place.

This is one of the best things I have done for myself in a long time. I feel stronger, better overall, and have more energy during the day (and that’s just after one month). I have been to gyms before and worked with personal trainers, and you guys have offered the best experience I’ve ever had, by a long shot. It seems like you care very much about your clients, and I can tell during work outs that everyone feels supported at the Ice Chamber. Thanks for such a great program and positive experience.

Prior to joining the Ice Chamber, exercise was on the bottom of my list. In the past, I ran a few miles on occasion, and maybe did some sit-ups, but never had the self motivation to continue my regimen. After being placed on modified bed rest prior to the birth of my twins, endured a cesarean section, and diagnosed with osteoporosis, I felt I had reached my unhealthiest state of being. I had very low muscle tone and couldn’t do a single sit-up or push up. I was mentally exhausted from being a new parent and had difficulty finding energy. I refused to stay this way and decided to change my lifestyle.Since joining the Ice Chamber, I discovered a part of me I never knew existed: a person who loves to exercise! Their strength and conditioning program is challenging, effective, and fun. I’m sure there are programs in the Bay Area that offer similar services, but none of them have Steve, Maya, and their staff’s infectious energy. Together, they create an intangible sense of community that you just can’t find anywhere else. Thanks to the Ice Chamber, I am the strongest and happiest I’ve ever been in my entire life.

Maya and Steve put me to the challenge every time I walk into the Ice Chamber. Being an entertainer, my fitness goals are extremely specific. Maya and Steve continuously motivate and support me in the attaining and maintaining of those goals. They are 110% behind me, and that support system has been awesome. I’ve found that life at the Ice Chamber mimics life in the real world. If you can get through the daily challenge of working out and pushing yourself to the limit, then you can push yourself in every other aspect of life. Maya and Steve live that philosophy and have graciously shared that with me. They are both exceptional people who are dedicated to the well being of their clients.

I’ve found new excitement and community at the Ice Chamber that I honestly did not believe could happen. Everyone at the gym is positive, goal-oriented, and entirely supportive of one another’s abilities. Working out is so much more fun when you’re around people who want to work hard with you.Indeed, It’s surprising to think that I’ve discovered new ways to make my body more useful — whether it’s through an increased pull-up count or demo-ing proper rowing technique for some of our lovely clients. I feel more fit and well rounded as an athlete now than I did while I was rowing.
Finally, and I am very grateful for this, Steven and Maya have introduced me to the world of kettlebell lifting. With their guidance, I’ve learned how to pursue an individual goal with all the set-backs and successes that entails. It has been eye opening and invaluable to learn how to push myself towards a goal without a peer group working constantly around me.
I look in the mirror now and see a body and a mind that can work as one. I’m proud to say that I have trained my body into a tool that does the things that I ask of it. But, I know that without the Ice Chamber and its entire community of wonderful, supportive people I would not have nearly as much confidence in my abilities or exciting opportunities to channel my competitive spirit into new sports. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I got hit with a freak accident that put pressure against the outside of my knee, buckling it inward. It hurt, I yelled and was lying clutching my knee thinking…”oh man, that’s it, my BJJ years are over…” . Well the next morning, to my surprise, I walked down our bedroom stairs with just a little stiffness. I’ve avoided a serious injury and I’m recovering fast… What made the difference? All of the fantastic training I’ve been doing with Steve and Maya! There is no doubt in my mind that their conditioning saved me from a serious injury and months off the mat. Thanks guys!

I just got back from a week-long backpacking trip in the Wyoming Rockies with Mark Richards where we covered approximately 80 miles in the high country in the course of 6 days. I started the trip with a lingering leg/calf-injury which perhaps would have caused many people to cancel the trip. However, I decided to give it a try – in part because I had the confidence from several months of Ice Chamber training, that I had good enough conditioning and muscle strength that could protect the injury. Despite a few dicey moments, I was able to complete the trip and come back with my leg in better condition than when I started the trip.I thought of the impact that the IC and IC community have had on my life. When I started out, I just wanted to lose a few pounds. After a while, I realized that in addition to losing some weight, I’d gained a new way of thinking about myself and about fitness. I started looking forward to the workouts and to seeing the people that had become part of my weekly routine. Instead of my goals being “remedial” (to “fix a weight problem”), my fitness goals and sense of self became positive – being in the best overall shape of my life, strong and flexible. This has started to impact other parts of my life – rather than trying to ‘solve problems’, I’m starting to look at how I can create a better, more positive life – and believe that I can do so.

Every once in a while you find that special place where you know you belong. The Ice Chamber is that place for us. My wife and I were determined to not sign up for another traditional fitness club – monotonously moving from machine to machine in an attempt to get fit. We wanted something more. We wanted to enjoy exercising – even though we did not know what that would look like. The Ice Chamber has exceeded all our expectations — making exercise fun and totally addictive. They have created a created a variety of dynamic programs of ever changing group exercises that will challenge the unfit and yet push the most successful athlete. The magic, beyond the energy and talent that Steve and Maya bring to their clients, is exercising in a group – with people who share your goals and constantly encourage you. At the Ice Chamber, ‘good people’ surround me – people I enjoy seeing each day.
