Jill vs. Kenny

The Handwalk Race: our 2x NCAA Gymnastics Champion, UCLA Hall of Famer, and 2x Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year against our USA Olympic Team Alternate in Judo (2004), Pan American Junior Champion in Judo, and 2x Colorado State Champion in Wrestling!

To be fair, Jill was issued the challenge AFTER she completed six times around a brutal circuit in record speed and sprinting a mile in between.  In addition, this was her second handwalk attempt within 5 minutes of the challenge.  While Kenny was as fresh as a daisy and ready for battle…

"I love dips now!" -Dave

Congratulations to Dave C. for winning the 2011 Body Fat Loss Challenge.   Dave went from 20.4% body fat down to 15.5%.

When Dave started training at the IC two years ago, he weighed 180lbs.  As a biomedical researcher and young bachelor at that time, he wasn’t proud of how unhealthy he felt on the inside.  After training with both the Core group as well as the 10am’ers of Morning Boot Camp, he lost over 20 lbs. his first year.  He also experienced a dramatic improvement in his performance, going from 1 dead hang pull-up to 11, and chopping 26 seconds off of his 500 meter sprint on the indoor rower.

After he heard the announcement of Gunther’s big win last year, he was inspired to give the IC Body Fat Challenge a try.  “I followed much of what Gunther did last year,” Dave said. “It’s an extreme effort.”  He is honest about the obvious changes he adopted immediately, beginning with an increase in both the intensity and frequency of his cardiovascular workouts on his off days from the Ice Chamber.  “I was on the Precor 100i elliptical for two hours at a time,” Dave says openly.  His ipod was the second tool he relied on heavily, especially during the fragile moments when he needed a mental boost.   Listening to either the soundtrack from Kickboxer or Rocky, Dave was inspired “to win” he says, “I wanted to challenge myself and see if I could do it.”

In addition to exercise, the other main component of his success was dietary, of course!  Dave began tracking his caloric intake.  He quadrupled the amount of vegetables he was eating and basically stuck to a combination of greens and lean sources of chicken and ground turkey everyday.  “If I had processed carbohydrates, like barley or steel cut oatmeal, they were low on the glycemic index.”  Gone were the days of what Dave calls his “going-to-town meals” which could have been any combination of burgers, fries, ice cream, and a couple of beers.

Today, weighing 144lbs., Dave is adamant that all of the sacrifice was well worth the reward!

The time is almost here for us to crown a winner for 2010′s Spring Performance Challenge.  As a reminder, the winner will be determined by the most reps performed in three minutes comprising of three exercises: Push-up, Sit-up, and Squat.  You can choose to break up the exercises in any manner you want (but keep in mind that the more you transition, the more time you lose).  The only requirement is that you perform at least thirty reps of each exercise.  The winner will receive a month of Flex Access.
