My first crush was on Michael Jackson! My brother DID have the famous Farrah poster up in his room (his first crush)
Thanks for all the great music this morning Steve….
…a shiny brand new MJ binder in third grade. I loved it because I could stare at his picture all day. I still love his music today as much as I loved it then! My other favorite MJ moment was from this morning… what an awesome musical tribute!
… leaving the room when the Thriller video came on because it was too scary for me. How old was I, you ask? Well, I’m not telling, but I will tell you that it was a lonnnngggg 2 months ago. No kidding.
The first cassette I bought was Thriller. I remember walking into the store, reaching into my red pleather MJ purse (it had the picture from the Off The Wall album cover on it) and buying it. It was all I would listen to.
I would play Thriller over and over again. Every time I heard the lyrics ‘now is the time… for you & I to cuddle close together’ I would squeal & kiss the cassette player.
and Farrah… amazing. She taught me that you could be a beautiful woman AND still totally kick butt.
The year was 1985.
Michael Jackson performed at my 5th birthday party. Or I should say, I really believed that the 12 year old my parents hired to dance for me and my friends was really really the Michael Jackson. He arrive with a large boombox and wrap around shades. He set up a small stage in the backyard, and did the moonwalk with the shiny glove. We went insane. A few songs into his set he had to leave. Michael Jackson was apparently in demand. We were disappointed, but understanding. That’s what fame is. Years later my parents told me that he had stage fright and that his parents had to come and pick him up. I wonder if that ever happened to the real Michael Jackson. Probably not.
I’m with Seth. I remember the Saturday morning J-5 cartoon…Tiger Beat (or something) pictures of Michael Jackson on a 10-speed bike (way cool)…and Off the Wall when I was in high school. youch I feel old. I don’t know what sticks out about Farrah–LOVED Charlie’s Angels. Can’t believe she was only on for one year.
My brother and I used to sneak up to watch charlie’s angels. We had a whole system. When we heard my dad coming upstairs, he would turn off the cable, I would turn off the TV and we would hurl ourselves into bed. I can still see him lunging for the cable box as my dad approached the top of the stairs!
The first album I ever owned was Jackson-5! I saw MJ in concert when he “cried” at the end of “She’s Out of My Life.” Classic.
I always liked Off The Wall more than Thriller, thinking at that time Thriller was hokey (exhibit A, “The Girl Is Mine”). I had the cassette version of Thriller, though, and played it in my Walkman when I wasn’t playing Marvin Gaye’s Midnight Love and Lou Reed’s Transformer. Why did I never buy Off The Wall? I guess I left MJ in the 80s.
Farah to me was always Farah Fawcett Majors, married to the $6M dollar man. I think that’s one of the reasons I used to watch that show: what does he have that I ain’t got? Besides bionics. Later found out that my mother in law used to date Oscar Goldman. Sometimes she pretends like she forgot.
I was a wee one, snuck into my teenage cousins b-day party… she received 4 copies of “Off The Wall” I was green with envy, even though I didn’t even own a record player… ahh, I remember the smell of Raintree lotion at that grown girls party.
The death of MJ has been a trip down memory lane for so, so many, causing us to recall our own “collection” of treasured moments, like reclaimed childhood. The irony of it all. But how beautiful the way it has stoked the feeling of compassion. In “my” lifetime, I have never seen so many news anchor choking up and with red eyes and face while reporting on MJs Memorial. Mesmerizing.

So sad.
My favorite is when he did the moon walk for the very first time.
Of course I can’t forget the beautiful Farrah!
I watched the Thriller video over and over again, once it aired on MTV (when they use to play videos!).

I’m such a wimp.
Moonwalking all over the living room.
The first boy I loved made me a tape of the Thriller album when I was in 4th grade. I still have it somewhere. I just loved MJ!

I suppose I’m dating myself but I remember the Jackson Five cartoon on Saturday mornings.
I think I was 6 when I saw the “Billie Jean” video. That was my introduction to the world of “cool”. We’ll miss you.

LOL Tom! Great post.
I’m late with this, but I still miss Michael! Had a hell of a lot of fun dancing to his music (still do) and for that I’ll be forever grateful.
