Marty Farrell = Impressive
Our friend Marty Farrell paid a visit to the IC last weekend. For those who don’t know, Marty is one the most unassuming elite athletes in the world. He is the only male American born Master of Sport in Kettlebell Lifting and also, pound-for-pound, the strongest kettlebell lifter in the country. At 70kg, Marty regularly lifts high-rep sets at over 90% of his body weight (as demonstrated in this video). He competes against guys twice his size. The technical precision of his movements as well as his work capacity make his sets exciting to watch.
We were fortunate enough to witness his 3 minute Long Cycle test just 6 weeks after his second major surgery. To put everything into perspective, Marty could barely pick up the 12kg bells three months ago after his first surgery. He had plenty to say about Kettlebell lifting in regard to his rehab. He feels that people with knee issues can benefit a great deal because of the low impact aerobic nature of the sport. The complex movement patterns involved also provide stimuli for fine motor recruitment. Finally, the connective tissues of the major joints are progressively strengthened due to high-rep submaximal axial loading. Last week, Marty set his new personal record with two 32kg kettlebells.
We want to thank Marty for his awesome visit and look forward to his full recovery!

Awesome!
That is freakin’ amazing! Marty’s form is flawless, and I have to say I’m more impressed by the kettlebell clean and jerk than I am with the barbell C & J. What I’m wondering is, how old is Marty?
that’s just sick! in a good way…
Edward, the barbell C & J and kettlebell C & J are completely different animals, although I tend to agree with you. Given the same load, the KBs are more difficult to manage. Unlike the barbell C & J, the kettlebell C & J requires unilateral pulling and overhead support. You can get away with a slightly weaker arm using the barbell, but the kettlebells will expose you. The odd shape also makes for tough transitions. I believe Marty is 31 this year.
Thats’s just too fun to watch!
Marty, best wishes for a full recovery.
Thanks for sharing the video with us Steve!
Marty is a great inspiration as well as being captain of Team America. What an awesome workshop that must have been! There’s a rumor that the C-Duff is planning a visit to your chamber!
Marty is a great inspiration for sure. Watching him handle the 32s is like watching Neo in the Matrix. I didn’t think it was possible for someone in my weight class to do what he does.
If C-Duff is coming, I am scared (and excited, at the same time).
When is the the great P-Hump coming?
I’m still not sure how Marty pulls that off every time. I think he has bones made of steel.
Hey, if Duff and P-Hump are coming to visit, I’m scared that they may have a hard time staying focused on kbs…
Hey everyone,
Steve and Maya are awesome. Steve can do a one arm pullup for those of you who do not know!
and the female athletes and great potential. Stick to it ladies.
Marty
