The run...well...it was murderous. "Hilly" didn't really describe it: three miles mostly uphill in the hot sun, then turn around and go back. You're so tired that is doesn't matter that you're running mostly downhill -- you're too thirsty and the vultures are circling...and then Jess breezes by with her perky smile and asks for forgiveness for coming up with this crazy idea in the first place! The big surprise for me was that all the competitors along the way were cheering for each other as they passed on the trail: "good job!" "way to go!" "you're almost there!" There was a guy I chatted with while passing him early in the running portion who later caught up with me again near the end of the race. We weren't sure we'd make it to the finish until we agreed to cross the finish line together. I think his name was Gary.. I remember that his wife had packed him lots of snacks, but they ran out too soon... - the important part was that we both wanted to finish and wanted to help each other get to the end - even though we were strangers several hours ago... All in all, I'd do it again.....after a long recovery time!
