Decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champions take a moment to rest (and pose) while prepping at the Chamber for the 2008 Pan American Championships.

I haven’t officially gotten into my old skinny jeans yet, but I have made considerable progress in recent months thanks to a lot of positive thinking and some good hard training. Celebrating particular markers of strength and fitness have definitely been the best part about my postpartum journey so far. Revisiting my old PRs seems so fresh and exciting. I’m discovering new reasons to love this stuff nearly every day. I have lost over 40 lbs. since Mateo was born (+ 10 lbs. if you include his weight), but it’s taken 10 months to get here and still, the marathon isn’t over. Wish me luck on this final leg of the race.
Everyone at the IC continues to serve as my main source of inspiration—especially all of our ladies who gave birth last year: Sherry, Rachel Q., Holly, Tae, Amy J., Amy I., Andrea, Megan, Shauna, Lorena, and Gladys just to name a few. The IC has become quite the hub for postpartum success stories (Ndeshi is still our reigning Queen, but Loredie’s in line for the throne) and I’m proud to be among you fine mamas. The collective support swirling through the gym these days is serving as a life-line for a lot of people (myself included).

Tonight’s pull-up clinic started with some isolation drills to re-educate the latissimus dorsi.

By the end of class, everyone’s lat strength improved 100%. Just ask Mary (looking stronger than ever).

Sometimes you have to work on pure strength to get that first pull-up. Swinging over the bar doesn’t always do the trick. Learn how to activate your latissimus dorsi before your biceps. Where are you in your pull-up practice?
