The Sound of Sweat

In terms of gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age range, and fitness levels, the IC has become a place of extraordinary diversity. One of the best ways this collective dissimilarity plays out each week is through the music we blast.
This has got me wondering, what tunes get you groovin’ and in the mood to train like a champion? Which songs, bands, or artists toot your horn and inspire you to run faster, jump higher, lift heavier? We just may add a few of your favorites to the IC playlist.
Click on comments to read a few of ours… you might be surprised!

I tend to like old rock (that’s now new again) and little bit of everything, U2, hip hop, even ah hem country. The classical stuff though slows me down. On another note, Rune I and were just bike riding with the kids on the beach walk….we all know about the Ice Chamber, we know Rune does the IC at the fire house and we call it the fire chamber, but we just saw some burley guys doing…the sand chamber! Only they were lifting…full beer kegs! They were serious too, squats, over head presses, sit ups!! Hilarious!! Ice, fire and sand! only in San Diego, of course no strong girls were to be found. They were all running with their tunes on shaking their heads!
See ya soon!

Renee, U2 is always classic. Hope you’re having fun in San Diego. Jenn, thanks for the gym mix! Big poppa, I had totally forgotten about Rollercoaster. Kelly, it’s time for you and Ivy to make us another mix with that list (I should give you some blank CDs so I don’t appear ungrateful
Some lyrics that for whatever reason get me to train hard:
“My momma said that your life is a gift and my momma said there’s much weight you can lift.â€
-Lenny Kravitz (Kerri, this one’s from “Always on the Run” –he really loved his Momma. Have you tripped on his song “Thinking of You”?)
“In the abundance of water, only the fool is thirsty.â€
-Bob Marley
“Life is a journey, a course like learning a martial art, you can’t have partial heart.†-Dead Prez
“If I’m hooked on a habit knowin’ damn well it could cause me my life, and I do what I should do without, shame on me.â€
-Stevie Wonder
“In the Land of I Am, I am more than I have been, I am more than I will be, I am all that I am†-Rickie BB
“I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I’d see you again.” (don’t mess with me–this song reminds me of my late brother Antonio)
-James Taylor
Okay, I know I need therapy… thank g*d for weightlifting!
Kerri,
Your list is the bomb! Can you make a mix CD for me?
My music varies with my mood and location. If I’m training by myself it’s SoCal punk from the 90s and Rob Zombie. If it’s a class or group setting then I have to have something with a beat that you can dance to…
The song that always gets me going and reminds me of the IC is E-40′s “Go Hard or Go Home”
I can vouch for Kelley H’s music diversity. Let’s just say Too Short, Foo Fighters, Goldfrapp, and the Roots on the same CD is not a rarity for her.
pixies, MIA, fergie, britney spears (yeah, i know), yeah yeah yeahs, coldplay (‘specially for running), interpol, franz ferdinand, handsom boy modeling school, gorillas. there are more but i can’t think of the names.
and i made this mixed cd for the gym? and it mysteriously disappeared…hmmm…
1. Goapele
2. Too Short
2. E40
4. 2pac
5. NWA..this is a family site so I will not list the songs.. : )
6. The rocky theme…I know it surprised me too.
7. Lenny Kravtiz american woman, I belong to you
8. Beyonce
9. Goapele
10. Rod Stewart…Do you think I am sexy
11. Maxwell, Urban Hang Suite…ok anything by him will do. : )
12. Beastie Boys
13. Korn
14. Kid rock
Turbo, you love Goapele (#1 and #9) as much as I love Lenny. I’m going to tell my old friend Theo that you deserve an honorary induction into her fan club. Btw, I heard they’re having a baby this year too–sweet, huh?
My gym music tends to run a little more mainstream than my usual taste in music but here are some favorite bands for working hard:
Fergie
Black Eyed Peas
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Jem (but not Jem and the Holograms)
Teddybears
Bloc Party
The Fray
Snow Patrol
Arcade Fire
Go-Go’s
The Postal Service
You do that Maya! Yes I heard about the baby, I wish I could just take her and the whole band and just put them in the middle of the Ice Chamber while I do my cardio. It would help me so much.
Bring your favorite mix CDs to the IC and we’ll remix it for the classes.
