On the Topic of Pull-ups

The pull-up is a fundamental movement for developing superior upper body strength; the variations are limitless. I’ve convinced Steve to share and demonstrate some of his favorites.

Steve chin-up
Basic Chin-up: With a supinated grip, Steve drives his elbows down past his ribs so that his chin clears the bar.

Steve Behind the Neck Pull-up
Behind the Neck Pull-up: With a pronated wide grip, Steve focuses on using his lats to pull his body up and in front of the bar. At the end of the movement, his trapezius and the bar connects.

Steve side to side pull-up
Sui-Sides: Using an alternated close grip, Steve starts underneath the bar, with his body’s midline (sagittal plane) parallel to it. He moves side to side, alternating right and left shoulder to the bar, as he performs each pull-up.

Steve Flying Body Row
Flying Body Row: With a pronated grip, Steve kips his body up into a horizontal position to complete the body row in midair.

Steve Weight Pull-up
Weighted Pull-up with Kettlebells: Using an alternated grip, Steve hooks his feet into two kettlebells and pulls with his lats to finish a classic dead hang pull-up. No kipping on this one.

Finger Grip Close up
Steven Fingers Pull-up
Climber’s Pull-up: Using only his index and middle fingers, Steve gets his chin over the bar. This is a great exercise for rock climbers.

Steven One Arm Pull-up
One Arm Pull-up: Using one arm, Steve muscles his way up to the top. This one is perhaps the most difficult to perform. ;-)

How come you didn’t show any hard versions? All these would be waaay too easy for me.

    Yeah.

  2. Turbo says:

Show off! Look at me I can bench press 5000 lbs with my pinkie…really though Steve you are the shiznit. When I grow up I want to be just like you. You and my Maya always amaze me.

  3. juliet says:

yeah, i kick those out before breakfast, where’s the no handed pull-up? huh steve?

  4. Mani says:

Hey ya’ll… we’ve got the best role models ever!! And just like Turbo, when I grow up I want to be just like you two…after I lose all the baby fat;)

  5. kelly says:

What’s interesting about the kettlebell weighted pull ups is that I often feel like I have a mama bell attached to each foot when I attempt regular pull ups, so it’s sort of like I, too, have mastered these.
And also coincidental: the two-finger pull ups? I often feel like I am doing my pull ups with one finger…not index…

Watch out Steve. I’m catching up to you.

  6. Bear Bear says:

Wow, I am just speechless. Hopefully someday I can get to two regular pulls and forget all the fancy stuff. Steve, were you ever bit by a spider because I think you are really spiderman in disguise?

  7. alan says:

flying body rows….ooohhh yeaaahhh, I just love saying that!

  8. Shari says:

    Whoa! My head just exploded!

  9. Elisha says:

I’m so impressed. Man, you just gave us all something to strive for! Haha! I’ll be thrilled if I can manage 1 basic pull-up this year!!!

  10. Steven says:

Okay, to shift the attention away from me, you should wait 10 months for the return of Baby K’s Momma. When she’s ready, you’ll see more than just body rows flying. ;-) Just right before the pregnancy, Maya was on track for 30 pull-ups, not to mention all the other crazy records she was setting.

  11. Lan-Ling says:

Actually, I am speechless. Trying to think of something clever to say but….well…nothing is coming. You and Maya are insane. Insane. In a good way…I think….

  12. kelly says:

Oh, I’ve seen Maya do pull ups. It’s unreal to watch. Given your combined athletic badassery, I wonder when Baby K will do a first pullup? At age three weeks?

  13. Shari says:

Baby K is doing pull-ups in utero, for sure.

And, like Lan-Ling, I too am speechless, still. Which, you know, is a first.
